Risk of injury in terminal operations due to stiff support legs and overly short crank handles on semitrailers
08/11/2016

In light of recent events, we would like to remind you of the importance of a free-moving height adjustment for support legs on semitrailers. The height of the support legs on a semitrailer must be adjustable when the semitrailer is suspended in the grapplers on a crane or mobile equipment. The crank handle used for this purpose must be sufficiently long to avoid a collision with the grapplers and injury to the hands of the operator. We regret to say that there have been repeated incidents of this nature recently. The technical specifications for cranable trailers stipulate that when the crank handle is fitted, the distance between the side wall of the trailer and the bent arm on the crank handle must be at least 320 mm. Please observe this distance and replace any crank handles that are too short.

The support legs are cranked several times in the terminal depending on the operating situation, e.g. if it is not possible to load directly onto the train. This means that terminal employees at transhipment stations with high volumes of trailers are placed under a great deal of physical strain. Please ensure therefore that the support legs are always in a good condition and, above all, that they are free-moving.

There are also repeated incidents of trailers being delivered without support leg crank handles. This is possible in principle, but it must be done with the agreement of the terminal operator.
