Dangerous goods information: dangerous goods labelling / documents and closure devices / UN 1040 ethylene oxide
01/30/2018
a) Dangerous goods marking / documents
In light of recent events, we should point out again that transport units must be delivered to terminals with the proper dangerous goods labelling (placards, labels, orange plates, etc.). The labels must be affixed to the transport units in such a way that they cannot fall off during transport. An adhesive strip is not sufficient!

Services via Kiel, Lübeck, Rostock and Trieste with ferries run in compliance with the IMDG Code:
1) For services to Kiel, Lübeck, Rostock or Trieste that subsequently include a sea journey with a shipping company that is run in compliance with the IMDG Code, please make sure that the dangerous goods markings conform to the IMDG Code. This means that the markings are applied in such a way that they remain on the transport unit or shipping package for three months in seawater (5.3.1.1.1.2 IMDG). The IMDG Code also requires the proper shipping name to be displayed on liquid and dry bulk containers in characters 65 mm high on at least two sides (5.3.2.0.1 IMDG).

2) When the transport unit is delivered to the departure terminal, the signed IMO declaration (Dangerous Goods Declaration) or the Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form must be given to the staff of the Kombiverkehr agency (this can also be done by email). The same applies for EMPTY, UNCLEANED transport units. It is important that these documents are signed. In the case of transport units with general cargo, the Container Packing Certificate must also be signed (5.4.5.1 IMDG).

Both of these requirements of course also apply for the delivery of transport units in foreign ports for ships operated in compliance with the IMDG Code.

b) Closure devices
There are increasing instances of failure to seal transport units properly, particularly in the case of empty, uncleaned tank containers. This concerns dome covers (wing screws missing or not properly tightened), covering caps (which are placed only loosely on top and open due to airflow in transit, interfering with overhead lines) and valve caps/flanges (which are not screwed on at all or are not tightened fully).

Please make absolutely sure you inform the unloader so that the unloader can fit or apply the closures properly again.

All the above points lead to repeated problems on in-transit checks by the monitoring authorities and hinder both your and our transport operations. The authorities may also impose fines.

UN 1040 ethylene oxide
Our partner Hupac has informed us that UN 1040 ethylene oxide can no longer be carried on any Hupac trains from 1 January 2018. This had already been the case for several years on connections to Busto (Gallerate) and has now been broadened.
