Spedition Bode and Kombiverkehr expand scope of cooperation
12/14/2015
  • New company train between Lübeck and Stockholm
  • Onward services within Germany and to and from Italy and the Benelux countries in the Kombiverkehr network
  • 74 tonnes less carbon dioxide per train departure

(Reinfeld / Frankfurt/Main, 14 December 2015) Reinfeld-based Spedition Bode GmbH & Co. KG and Frankfurt-based Kombiverkehr KG, Europe's largest provider of intermodal transport solutions, are expanding their long-standing cooperation in environmentally friendly road-rail Combined Transport. The launch on 14 December 2015 of an exclusive company train between Lübeck and Rosersberg, near Stockholm in Sweden, will further cement the relationship with this customer, which has existed since 2009. The Schleswig-Holstein logistics company previously used various national and international routes in Kombiverkehr's European network on a daily basis.

The shuttle train, which operates three times a week and has capacity for up to 38 trailers and containers or a payload of up to 1,000 tonnes, will be used by Spedition Bode to transport consumer goods and food (Lidl) in particular, some of it in special temperature-controlled trailers. The benefits of using rail transport are twofold for customers in trade and industry: apart from being a safe and economical mode of conveyance, it is precisely in transport to and from northern Europe that the environmentally friendly nature of the railway also gives it a crucial advantage over road haulage and ferry services. Wind and water power now account for more than 50 per cent of the energy mix in Sweden. As a result, the new direct train saves around 74 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per departure over the entire route. "Our company stands for sustainable climate-friendly rail transport, which is something that we hope to expand continuously on behalf of our customers," says Kai-Jörg Bode, the managing director of the forwarding company. "We created the best possible conditions for this back in 2014, when we invested in one hundred tilt semitrailers and refrigerated trailers which are EN 12642 Code XL-certified for Combined Transport on express freight trains."

DB Schenker Rail provides traction for the train, which starts at the Lübeck Cargo-Terminal-Lehmann (CTL) in Germany and finishes at the Swedish terminal in Rosersberg, forty kilometres to the north of Stockholm. The train covers the 1200-kilometre route in just 24 hours, including a stop in Helsingborg to load and unload individual consignments. "As a leading network operator, we offer all customers maximum flexibility day in day out when it comes to routing their consignments. This advantage also benefits our company train customers by enabling them to have their intermodal transport units transported onward through gateway terminals," says a confident Peter Dannewitz, Sales Manager at Kombiverkehr KG. Spedition Bode uses the existing onward transport services from Lübeck Skandinavienkai, to and from Munich, Cologne and Italy for instance.

Spedition Bode, a freight forwarding company based in Schleswig-Holstein, will be relying even more heavily in future on the wide range of services provided by Kombiverkehr KG. Apart from its existing routes in the open train network run by the operator, the forwarder will be running its own company train between Lübeck and Sweden with Kombiverkehr from 14 December in order to send shipments by rail, an efficient, economical and climate-friendly mode of transport.
