Ongoing quality defects in hazardous goods marking
08/20/2018
The following sentence is to be added to sub-paragraph 5.3.1.1.1. of ADR / RID 2019 in relation to this subject:

'The placards shall be weather-resistant and shall ensure durable marking throughout the entire journey'.

We are sorry to say that there has still been no significant improvement in the quality of hazardous goods marking. Since the monitoring authorities are continuing to make greater checks on the labelling of transport units containing hazardous goods, we must ask you again to please make sure when labelling transport units containing hazardous goods that the dimensions of the placards and labels or orange boards conform to the requirements of chapters 3.4.13, 5.3.1.7.1, 5.3.2.2.3 and 5.3.3 of ADR / RID / IMDG. In other words, the form, colour and text must conform to the requirements set out in the hazardous goods regulations. Some negative examples from the recent past are shown below.

On orange boards, the line thicknesses must meet the requirements and the numbers must be clearly identifiable:

Similarly, the colour of the orange board must meet the requirements of 5.3.2.2.1 ADR / RID, which is not the case here:

All labels must be affixed in weatherproof form so that they do not come loose in moisture or frost. Particular attention must be paid to the type of sticker, as the placards here are difficult to identify:

We also see placards made of paper, but these do not stick to the transport unit for very long:

It is not permitted to fasten placards to the customs label:

Lashing straps should not obscure any numbers:

It must also be ensured that the placards comply with the hazardous goods regulations. In the picture on the left the lines on one side are missing. In the picture on the right all lines are missing, both on the board and on the placard:

In addition, the dimensions should comply with the requirements (placard at least 250 * 250 mm):

There must also be no sign of damage on the labels:

Invalid markings must be covered or removed (-> 5.3.1.1.5, 5.3.2.1.8 ADR / RID).
Correct:

Incorrect:

This is what a hazardous goods label that conforms to the requirements of the hazardous goods regulations looks like:
