Kombiverkehr connects Ludwigshafen terminal with Duisburg-Moerdijk train
05/10/2017
  • As of 8 May 2017 there will be five train departures a week in each direction between Ludwigshafen, Duisburg and Moerdijk in the Netherlands
  • Connecting services to and from Spain, Portugal, Italy, Turkey and Greece
  • Knock-on effect releases more capacity in national transport

(Frankfurt/Main, 8 May 2017) Starting 8 May 2017, Kombiverkehr KG, Europe’s largest provider of intermodal transport solutions, has expanded the direct train service running between the Duisburg DUSS terminal and the terminal in the Dutch port of Moerdijk – which has only been in operation since the beginning of January 2017 – with a connection to and from the Ludwigshafen terminal. This means that an end-to-end transport service for containers and swap bodies from the Netherlands to Ludwigshafen and back is now available with immediate effect. With the inclusion of the BASF terminal in Ludwigshafen, the frequency of the multi-group train service has risen from three to five departures a week in each direction.

“We have been able to up the frequency of the existing train to and from Duisburg to five departures a week in each direction sooner than we had initially expected. That means our forwarding customers can now enjoy the benefits not only of greater capacity, but also an extended range of products in gateway services from Ludwigshafen”, explained Peter Dannewitz, Sales Manager at Kombiverkehr. On international routes, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Turkey can be reached from the Netherlands via Ludwigshafen. Not only does the new route cater to the demand for international services, though, it also provides a useful boost to capacity on the national service between Ludwigshafen und Duisburg, which has been stretched to the limits for quite some time.

As well as the option of local delivery and collection by truck at the Moerdijk port terminal, the port also provides access to the ferries to and from Great Britain and Norway. The traction for the train is provided by KombiRail Europe, a railway company that specialises in the Betuwe line.

At just 16 hours or thereabouts, the journey time of the new train gives forwarders and transport companies the option of transporting goods and merchandise rapidly between the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and the Dutch province of North Brabant.
