Dangerous goods information
03/17/2017
a) Dangerous goods marking / documents
In light of recent events, we would like to remind you that transport units delivered to the terminals must have the proper dangerous goods labels (placards, labels, orange boards, etc.). The labels must be affixed to the transport units in such a way that they cannot fall off during transport. An adhesive strip is not sufficient!

Services via Kiel, Lübeck, Rostock and Trieste with ferries running according to the IMDG Code:

1)    For services that run via Kiel, Lübeck, Rostock or Trieste and then include a sea journey with a shipping company that is operated in compliance with the IMDG Code, please make absolutely sure that the dangerous goods markings conform to IMDG Code requirements.

Important: This means that the markings are applied in such a way that they remain on the transport unit or shipping package for three months in seawater (5.3.1.1.1.2 IMDG).

The IMDG Code also stipulates that the "proper shipping name" must be indicated on liquid and dry bulk containers in characters 65 mm high on at least two sides (5.3.2.0.1 IMDG).

2)    The signed IMO Dangerous Goods Declaration or the Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form must be handed to the staff of our Kombiverkehr agency when the transport unit is delivered to the shipping terminal. Alternatively, it can be sent by e-mail. The same applies for EMPTY, UNCLEANED transport units. It is important that these documents are signed. In the case of transport units with general cargo, the Container Packing Certificate must also be signed (5.4.5.1 IMDG). In accordance with the IMDG, the signing can also be done electronically.

Both of these requirements also apply for services that are not handled end-to-end with Kombiverkehr.

b) Closure devices
There are increasing instances of failure to seal transport units properly, particularly in the case of empty, uncleaned tank containers. This concerns dome covers (wing screws missing or not properly tightened), covering caps (which are placed only loosely on top and open due to airflow in transit, interfering with overhead lines) and valve caps/flanges (which are not screwed on at all or are not tightened fully).

Please make absolutely sure you inform the unloader of these points so that the unloader can fit or apply the closures properly again.

All the above issues lead to repeated problems during transit due to checks by the monitoring authorities and hinder both your and our transport operations. The authorities may also impose fines.

c) Duty to display warning signs on containers with a ladder
Every container fitted with a ladder must display a yellow sign warning of the danger from overhead power lines. The lightning flash on the warning sign must be at least 175 mm (6.875") in height. The size of the warning sign - as measured between the outside edges of the black frame - must not be less than 230 mm (9"). The sign must be attached near the ladder (DIN EN ISO 6346). If the sign is missing, this may result in rejection at the terminal check-in.

Containers with ladders must display the yellow warning sign shown here.
