Kombiverkehr expands national network from the Ruhr region

Trains to roll again between Duisburg and Basel from January - 640 kg less CO2 emissions for every truckload shipped

From Monday, 11 January 2010, Frankfurt-based Kombiverkehr will be offering additional alternatives for environmentally-friendly transport between the Rhine/Ruhr region and Basel. Three trains a week will run to and from the DUSS terminal in Duisburg-Ruhrort Hafen and Basel on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from that date. The overnight services will relieve the heavily congested lines between Cologne, Wuppertal and Basel and will also offer forwarders and transport companies additional connection options to Kombiverkehr's national and international routes from the Duisburg hub. Onward connections from Duisburg include services to Leipzig, Rotterdam and Poland, among others.

The introduction of new combination trains, which shift the transport of semitrailers, swap bodies and containers from road to rail and thereby help to relieve trunk routes along the Rhine and Ruhr, stems from the results of the latest customer survey carried out by the company. "Our regular customer surveys enable us to keep our ear very close to the ground, so that we can react as quickly as possible to the highlighted demand", said Robert Breuhahn, managing director of Kombiverkehr. Every time a truck consignment is shifted from road to rail, users of the new combination trains cut the emissions of harmful greenhouse gases caused by transport. The transportation of a 25-ton load of a modern truck of the Euro 5 emissions class by rail between Duisburg and Basel produces 640 kilograms less CO2 than transport by road - a saving of more than 75 per cent. The actual emissions saving could be even higher, depending on the emissions class of the truck used. A customised quick comparison of pollutant emissions by road and rail for a particular route can be obtained free of charge at any time via the online timetable information section of www.kombiverkehr.com > Customer information > Online-Timetable.
